Washing Machine Potters Wheel
2021 - London, UKI repurposed a non-functional washing machine into a fully functional pottery wheel. The process began with the careful disassembly of the washing machine, removing its outer casing to reveal the inner workings.
After removing the drum from the washing machine's motor and suspension, I modified it to serve as the central wheel head. This involved securing it to the motor shaft with brackets and ensuring it was well-balan- ced. The outer plastic of the drum now works as a splash pan to catch any excess clay and water.
Once the modifications were complete, I tested the newly converted pottery wheel to ensure it spun smoothly and without any wobbling. I used a separate speed controller, to regulate the wheel's speed during the pottery-making process.
With the pottery wheel now fully operational, I set up my pottery workspace and began crafting beautiful pottery pieces. The repurposed washing machine allowed me to contribute to sustainable practices by giving new life to an old appliance. This project was a testament to the power of creativity and resourcefulness in turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.
